College Fauna

Favorable weather and spacious area of College campus makes it possible to grow a miniature forest area where endemic flora and fauna of Birbhum can be found easily. Large vegetations of this area have been developed a healthy forest ecosystems which provide great opportunities for the productions of biodiversity. Basically Insects play a key role in this context. They include different types of grasshopper/locust (Oethoptera: Acrididae), dragon flies(Odoptera), butterflies, moths, Scarab Beetle (Phileurustruncatus), beetles, lady bird, ants, spiders, centipeds, millipeds, maggots, etc. Birds include a mix of hilly and plain-land dwelling species like Red whiskered Bulbul, Oriental Magpie Robin, Spotted Dove, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Green Bee-eater, Indian Roller, Common Hoopoe, Stork billed Kingfisher, Little Cormorant, Black Drongo, Purple Sunbird, Blue throated Barbet, Black rumped Flameback , Rufous Treepie, babbler, and some migratory birds like Bar headed Goose, Asian Openbill Stork, Ruddy Shelduck etc.There are amphibians like toadand frog (Bufo melanostictus, Rana tigrina, Hylaspand Racophorus sp), reptiles like lizards (Gecko sp etc) and various type of venomous and non venomous snakes including vipers, striated kraits (Bungurus sp), cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), colubrid snake (Xenochrophis sp), dhaman(Ptyas sp), chiti(Boiga forsteni).Other than feral dogs and domestic cattle, the most frequently encountered non-human mammal is the hanuman, a long tailed grey langur (Macacca mulata)
